From the time you were a kid, you’ve been told how important physical activity is to your health and well-being. You know it helps prevent and mitigate chronic illnesses from high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol to arthritis, depression, and heart disease.
But did you know that research shows people who started exercising in midlife enjoy the same level of protection against mortality as those who have always worked out? Also, the inverse is true: if you slack off at midlife, all that hard work supporting better health and longevity disappears.
And put aside what you do or don’t do: starting around the ripe young age of 30, you’ll naturally lose 3% to 5% of your muscle every decade that follows. You’ve got to counteract nature intentionally, or you’ll lose about 30% of your muscle mass over time.
This is why I say getting older is inevitable. Becoming weak and fragile is preventable.
